19th CENTURY RENOVATION

Built around 1850, this house went through several additions and renovations
over the last 150 years, the last one in the 1960’s. There was necessary
structural rehabilitation and mechanical updates, plus the new owner wanted
to return the facade to its original classic simplicity. Important design
objectives were to bring in more light and to open up the kitchen area to
create an inviting space for dining and gathering.
The falling-down shed at the rear of the house was hauled away and a small
cape cottage, slated for demolition as a part of the Fine Arts Work Center
construction project, was moved across the lane, to become the artist-owner’s
new studio.
